LONDON � Wayne Rooney has praised Dimitar Berbatov's determination to rediscover his goal-scoring touch as the Manchester United strikers attempt to make up for the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Premier League champions received 80 million pounds (C$143 million) from Real Madrid for the Portugal winger but he was their top scorer for the previous two seasons and his absence is likely to be keenly felt.

A first-half goal from Wayne Rooney proved to be enough for Manchester United to commence their Premier League campaign with victory over Birmingham City this afternoon.

The striker netted from close range just after the half-hour mark after his header had rebounded off of the post, and despite having a flurry of chances had to settle for a single goal win over the newly-promoted away side.

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has expressed confidence in Dimitar Berbatov's ability to deliver next season.
